After two days of phone tag, Ben and I finally got to talk tonight after he got back from his man-date with Brad. And Derrick.
"How was the movie?" I asked.
"Meh," he said. "So, question."
Here we go, I thought. The Derrick Inquisition.
"Shoot," I said.
"Did you and Derrick used to date or something?"
"Sort of. Why?"
"He was just kind of a douchebag to me, and I thought maybe you two had some history."
"What did he do?" I asked.
"He was just playing the 'I know K. better than you do' game all night. You really dated that guy? He doesn't seem like your type."
"He's not," I explained. "Which is why it didn't work out."
"Are you guys still friends?"
"Not really. We don't like, hate each other or anything. We just don't really talk anymore."
"Gotcha."
We changed the subject. I told him about shooting the past couple of days, which has been amazing. Being on-location is so much more exciting than being stuck in an office. He told me about dinner at Mitchell and Ursula's, and how stressful work is, but that he's looking forward to his outdoor adventure trip this weekend. Even though we were having a pleasant conversation, I could tell he was still bothered.
"Okay, spill it," I said, finally. "What's wrong?"
"I have another question
" Ben said hesitantly.
"Okay
"
"Is Derrick the guy you cheated on Brandon with?"
My heart sank. "Yeah," I admitted.
"That's what I figured," Ben said. "He said something about how the last time he'd seen you, you had been dating Brandon."
Why would Derrick even mention that? I thought, cursing him in my head.
"You know I would never do that to you, right?" I asked, hearing the panic in my voice. "It's the only time I ever did anything like that, ever, and honestly, I still beat myself up over it on a fairly regular basis. I totally learned my lesson."
"I know," he said.
"You don't sound convinced."
"I do know, K.," he sighed. "But I just spent two hours with two guys who you've been
intimate with, and one of them happens to live with you and the other one is staying with you, and it was just
a lot."
I wanted to point out that I had never slept with Brad, and that I wasn't technically there for Derrick to be staying "with," but I was fairly certain it wouldn't improve the situation.
"I wish I was there right now," I said instead.
"Me too. I'm really tired. I'm going to go to bed."
"Okay," I said. "I love you."
"Love you two. Bye, K. Talk to you tomorrow."
Well, I was feeling really good about the whole shooting-on-location thing. Now I'm just worried about what it's going to do to Ben and me. Tex and Meg seem to have it all figured out maybe I'll ask them for some tips.
