Friction

Mandy and I thought we had it all worked out – she deals with everything for the first part of the series, which has already been shot and is in post-production, and I handle everything for getting the second part going. Only there are so many moving parts, and so many things are priority, that we're constantly having to switch gears.

"I promise it isn't always going to be this chaotic," she says. "Once we have enough money to operate like a normal business, we'll be able to hire more people and actually have clearly defined roles."

"Why don't we get some interns?" I asked.

"We tried that," she sighed. "And it was just more work for us, training them and giving them constant direction, and in some cases, redoing their work. It made us way less efficient."

"It wouldn't-a been, if we'd started them at the right time, instead of right smack in the middle of a shoot," Tex drawled.

Mandy looked at him like she wanted to murder him on the spot. I was shocked by her reaction, as I rarely see her lose her cool.

"Tex," Nate monotoned, as though he'd done it a hundred times, "Don't start."

Tex rolled his eyes and Mandy got up and walked out of the office, slamming the door behind her. Nate sighed. I thought back over the small amount of time I've spent in the office with Mandy and Tex. Do they not get along? I wondered. I suddenly remembered two separate occasions during our 16-hour-day-hell-week.

1) Mandy had been adamant that we not use a clip from an interview with one New Orleans resident, who was elderly and spoke slowly with a thick Cajun accent, saying that he was unintelligible. I had suggested we subtitle him, and Tex had agreed. Mandy felt that this was unacceptable because he was speaking English, and that we should just scrap it entirely. Even after Tex and I overruled her, she wouldn't agree to keeping it in. Finally, Tex blew up at her, saying, "Jesus H. Christ, Mandy, just let it go!" She had kept her opinions to herself for the rest of the night.

2) Tex had given Mandy his expense report for New Orleans, and she had disputed some of the items, saying that they didn't fall within the company guidelines for reimbursable purchases. After some back and forth, she had said, exasperated, "Tex, Mammoth isn't paying for you to go on vacation, and I'm sure Nate wouldn't appreciate one of his closest friends trying to rip off his company." This, of course, made Tex go off, and as it was closing time, I slipped out before it got super ugly.

"K., feel free to look into hiring some interns if you want to and have some free time," Nate said, snapping me out of my recollection. "Preferably ones with production experience."

"Yeah, unlike the ones Mandy hired," Tex grumbled.

That's not going to make things awkward between Mandy and I at all, I thought to myself. I guess my work family is a little more dysfunctional than I'd previously thought. As long as it's work drama, and not personal drama, though, I can deal with it.

When I get back from New Orleans, things should calm down, and I'll start looking into interns. I'm going to get Mandy involved, though, and make it something that we're doing together, so she doesn't feel like I'm stepping on her toes. And while Tex and I are traveling, I'm going to try to figure out exactly how large this rift is between them, and see if there's any way to repair it, for all of our sakes.
