Family Ties

September 4, 2010 at 12:11AM By Jessica Hulett | Comments

I have my first family-free moment right now, and it is blissful. Unfortunately, I am too exhausted to spend much time basking.

The good news is, we managed to get all of our work done on Thursday night/Friday morning, as was our goal. It took 16+hour days and very little sleep, but we did it. I haven't pulled hours like that since finals in college, and it's a little harder now than it was then, physically, but I soldiered through.

Nate closed up shop at 1:00 on Friday, and I headed home to do a quick clean-up before everyone came. Brad bolted for the weekend (I don't blame him), but he was nice enough to clean the bathroom and kitchen before going, which was a huge relief. The parents arrived a little after 3:00, and LB, Danielle and Emma showed up shortly thereafter.

Emma is so big! And gorgeous, and smart, and completely awesome, and she totally makes me want to have one. And things between LB and Danielle seem to be really great.

"Are you getting enough sleep, K.?" my mother asked after kisses and hellos were exchanged all around, squinting at me.

"I worked a lot this week," I explained. "And didn't get a lot of sleep."

"Oh K., you need your beauty rest. Your complexion looks ruddy."

Thanks, Mom. She may be a new-age hippie now, but old habits die hard. Mom and Dad put their stuff in my room, and LB and Danielle got settled into Brad's. I put a pillow and blanket on the couch for myself, and then we headed out to a family-friendly Chinese joint down the street. Over dinner, I told them about my new job.

"That sounds so exciting!" Mom said. "When will you be going to New Orleans?"

"Soon," I said. "As soon as we get the client to sign-off on the first part of the series, we're going to start shooting the second. Mandy is going to stay in the office for this one, and I'm going to go."

"How long will you be there?" Dad asked.

"About two weeks," I said.

"How's Benny-boy going to feel about you being gone?" LB asked.

I made a face at him. "He's fine with it," I said. "And he's going to come visit me over the weekend."

Mom told me about some energy healing thing she'd just got done, and Dad updated me on his golf game. LB is up for a promotion at work and Danielle is enjoying being a stay-at-home mom for now. Things are good on the family front.

My parents didn't last long after dinner, and Danielle didn't last long after that. LB and I stayed up for awhile, him with a beer and me with a glass of wine, talking but not talking, because that's what we do. People who know us both well think it's weird when I describe us as "close," when we don't really tell each other anything, but we kind of don't have to. When he says that he and Danielle are thinking about visiting my parents and leaving Emma there for a weekend so they can get away, I know what he really means is that he's working on his marriage, and that he cares about it. And when I casually tell him that Sarah moved to L.A. and is doing well, he knows that's my way of saying that Sarah's moved on. We say a lot, and hear a lot, when we aren't saying anything. And there's something comforting in that.
