Today was my first official day at Mammoth Object, and it was a bit strange, but not necessarily in a bad way.
Nate has a small office space rented out, and when I say "small," I mean it's the size of a closet, with four desks mashed together and a banner with our logo on one of the walls. When I showed up at 10:00, no one was there, but there was a folder with my name on it and a note on top from Mandy:
K.-
As you know, I'm shooting in New Orleans all this week and next with Tex. So sorry I'm not there for your first day! Here's all the info you need for payroll, and instructions for setting up your voicemail and email. Nate will be in and out all week, and I'll be sending you emails from the road. Feel free to work from home if you want to just give Nate a heads up if you're going to. See you in a couple of weeks!
- Mandy
When I read that I'd basically be alone in the office for two weeks, my first thought was, "Am I going to have any actual work to do?" and then my second thought was, "If I don't have any actual work to do, does that mean I'm not going to get paid?" Nate had said we didn't have set hours that we worked when work needed to get done, at least for now. I decided not to worry too much about it, though, and started getting myself set up.
Well, once I powered up the company-issued netbook and logged into my account, I realized I was worrying for nothing. I already had about 20 emails from Mandy with things she needed me to do, and about five from Nate. I found a notebook and started making a to-do list (old-school I know, but that's how I roll). I wasn't sure about what was priority, so I guessed on the top items and sent Mandy an email to have her confirm. I was right, so I got to work.
Nate came in around 3:00, and seemed surprised to see me there.
"Oh, hey K. I totally forgot you were starting today." (Thanks, Nate.) "Are you getting settled in?"
"I am, thanks! And I'm busy, which is good. I have a couple of questions about payroll and hours, though. Are those Mandy questions?"
He nodded. "Okay, I need to make some phone calls. Do you need something to do?" I held up my to-do list, and he laughed. "Okay, you have plenty to do. I'll leave you to it."
I sent Mandy an email with my payroll questions, mostly centered on minimum/maximum weekly hours and lunch breaks. She wrote back immediately telling me not to work more than 40 hours without approval, and that the company pays for an hour lunch break for every eight hours worked, which Nate wants us to actually take, and not work though. She apologized, again, for not being there to give me a proper orientation, which was appreciated but so not necessary.
So far, working at Mammoth Object is a bit chaotic. Clearly, everyone's still figuring out how this thing is going to work. I'm guessing it will make for some rough patches, but I'm confident that we'll figure it out. It's funny even though I'm basically working by myself right now, I feel like I'm actually a part of something in a way I haven't been before.
