Fortunately I don't have any juicy horror stories about Ashley meeting my parents. Much like a first date, Ashley seemed a bit nervous until her first sip of wine, then began to relax. She's naturally self-deprecating, which made for a funny moment when she inadvertently said she used to “play with herself.” She meant to say that she used to play board games with herself growing up, but the innuendo gave everybody a laugh and helped break the ice. Everything went really well, my parents like her, and we've crossed another hurdle in our relationship.
Ashley spent the night at my place, and Monday morning I noticed that she'd left her dress hanging on the end of my shirt rack. I have to admit, it surprised me. When I saw the short, black Yves Saint Laurent dress hanging in my closet, here's what went through my mind:
"Good, she feels comfortable in my place."
When a guy has his own place, he wants others to feel comfortable in what he has created, especially the girl he is dating. I like the fact that Ashley likes me and my condo enough to make herself at home.
"Uh-oh, she's taking over my space"
As many of you ladies know, guys are very territorial, and I'm not sure I'm ready to share my space yet. If after two months there is one dress in the closet, when will I find tampons stuffed inside my medicine cabinet?
"On no, she's settling in."
We all know that both guys and girls can be guilty of "letting go" when we get cozy in a relationship. Guys may gain a couple of pounds, girls sometimes cancel their monthly waxes. I hope the honeymoon isn't over yet!
"Is that designer?"
Ashley is a label whore. Call me crazy, but I looked at the tag on the dress and consulted with one of my trusted girl friends at Cosmo, who validated my concern. It’s always scary when a guy gets a whiff of a girl's expensive habits. Unless she bought that dress at a garage sale, it is the most expensive article of clothing in my closet. Yikes!
