Ben and I got back from Puerto Rico today, and I have to say it was the best vacation I've ever been on with a boyfriend. Not only do we have excellent travel compatibility, but we gravitate toward the same activities and experiences.
We spent Saturday and Sunday in San Juan, and then hopped on a puddle jumper plane to Vieques. In both locales, we had some of my all-time favorite vacation food. If you've never tried mofongo or pasteles, I highly recommend you find a Puerto Rican restaurant and do so immediately. Yum!
We did the bio-bay thing that Naomi suggested the night we got to Vieques, and it was definitely the highlight of the trip. Two local guides led about 30 of us out to a bay at on kayaks. After about 10 minutes of rowing, my oars started glowing every time they hit the water. It got stronger the farther we rowed, and then we tied up the boats and swam. Little beads of water on your face would glow, and you could make a lightshow just by splashing around. It was unlike anything I'd ever seen or done before.
The only downside to the trip was that, because we split our time between two places, I didn't feel like I was able to do either justice, tourism-wise. Ben agreed. We made a mutual decision that the next vacation we go on, we're going to pick a place and stay there so we can explore everything. We've already tossed around a few ideas for our next trip the Galapagos Islands, Belize and Vancouver are at the top of our list.
We also had lots of beach time, did some hiking and snorkeling, and even got a couples massage at one of the resorts in Vieques. And of course we had insane amounts of hotel sex. Well, technically it was "guest house" sex, but that doesn't sounds as good. Seriously, though, is there any better sex than hotel sex? I don't think so. Afterward, we'd listen to the waves crashing outside of our window, and share fantasies of staying in Puerto Rico forever and opening up our own guest house and/or bar and/or restaurant and/or tour guide company.
I've tried to avoid the whole thinking about our future thing, because I don't want to get so preoccupied with worrying about where we're going that I forget to enjoy the present, which is wonderful and thoroughly worth enjoying. It was fun playing "what if" with Ben, though. I didn't tell him this, of course, but I'm getting to a point where I can see us ten years down the road, with a house, dog, and kids, and for probably the first time in my life, the idea that the person I'm with now could be the person I'm with forever, doesn't scare me. Instead, it makes me look forward to finding out what comes next.
