You know what's insane? Ben and I have been together for !
The other day, we had a talk about when our official "start" was, and mutually agreed that it was the day he crashed my lunch hour. Even though it hadn't been prearranged, it had felt like a first date it was obvious we were interested in each other, we shared a meal and played the getting-to-know-you game, and by the end of it, we had already agreed on a dinner date. And once we established that, we decided to have ourselves a fancy night out to celebrate.
At the end of the work day, I slipped into the office bathroom and traded in my jeans for a little black dress, brushed out my hair and threw on some eyeliner and lipstick. I dashed out to meet Ben at this swanky Japanese joint downtown. When I got there, he was waiting out front, in a dark suit, a bouquet of orchids in his hand.
"Hello beautiful," he said, kissing me lightly on the lips. "These are for you." He handed me the orchids.
"We said no gifts," I reminded him.
"Flowers don't count as gifts," he said.
"They so do. And so does this, probably." I handed him a small box.
He gave me a stern look, opened the box containing cufflinks with the logo of the Philadelphia Eagles (his team) on them, and laughed.
"Awesome," he said. "And timely! Thank you."
Our table wasn't ready, so we headed to the bar and ordered two glasses of champagne.
"To six fantastic months," I said, raising my glass.
"And many more," he said, smiling. We clinked our glasses together.
Over dinner, Ben asked me to name the five places I was most interested in visiting.
"Hm," I said, thinking. "Tokyo
mmm, Costa Rica. Peru. New Zealand. And
kind of a toss-up between Paris and Rome. Why? Are we taking a vacation?"
"Well, you need a normal work schedule first, but let's start thinking about a big trip. It will be fun.""What are your top places?"
"Well, I've done Peru, Rome and Paris, but Costa Rica or Tokyo would be cool, and I've wanted to go to New Zealand ever since 'Lord of the Rings.' Don't call me a nerd."
"Nerd."
After some of the best sushi I've ever had, we headed back to Ben's place.
"Look at you!" I said, looking at the boxes everywhere. "You're almost packed!"
"I know," he said. "I didn't realize that I have like no stuff until I started packing. I'm going to have to do a lot of shopping to fill a two bedroom apartment."
"I'll help. Spending other peoples' money is way more fun than spending my own."
Ben laughed. We stretched out on the bed next to each other.
"Have I told you lately how happy you make me?" he asked.
"Yes. Have I told you?"
"Yes, but feel free to tell me some more."
So I did. First verbally, then non-verbally. And I'm pretty sure he got the message.
