A few nights ago, Ashley and I had "The Talk."
She came for a midweek sleepover and although I love living alone, it was really nice having her there to cook dinner with, go out to get ice cream, cuddle on the couch, then get to sleep before 11 p.m. I hadn't really thought about it until now, but Ashley is the first girl I've woken up next to, had breakfast with, and then kissed before leaving for work. It sounds like I'm living a suburban male cliché, but it actually made me feel older, and it made our relationship seem far more advanced.
After dinner, she mentioned that she went out to lunch with a guy at work on Monday. She almost sounded remorseful as she tried to explain that it was totally innocent and that she has trouble saying no to those types of invitations. Personally, I was far more impressed with her openness and honesty about the situation than I was jealous or threatened by this mystery guy. I took this as an opportunity to clarify our relationship status.
"Since the night we first met I've liked you way too much to consider other girls right now. Although we haven't said the words yet, I absolutely consider you my girlfriend," I said.
With that she interjected, "And I consider you my boyfriend, which is why I'm telling you this now."
It was a really sweet moment, and one that properly reflects the solid foundation that we are beginning this relationship on. We continued with a conversation about jealousy. Fortunately neither one of us is jealous, which is good because we both have a number of friends of the opposite sex, and that has been a problem for me in past relationships.
So now, after two months of dating, we're officially exclusive. Making it official wasn't that big an issue for me. Very early on, like by the first date, a guy will know whether or not he can envision himself exclusively dating a girl. It's the engagement that's the tough one. And that won't be happening anytime soon!
