Tex and Mandy came back from New Orleans late Friday night, and returned to the office today. When I got in, everyone was there, and I realized for the first time how really cramped and unmanageable it was going to be with the four of us trying to work at one time.
"So, uh, you guys wanna have a meeting about the trip?" Nate asked.
"Yeah," Tex said. "Let's see if the conference room is available."
"We have a conference room?" I asked, and everyone laughed and laughed and laughed. No, we do not have a conference room.
Mandy and Tex gave a run down of the trip. They shot more than enough footage, got great interviews, and, combined with all of the old stock footage I found of past disasters, we have more than we know what to do with.
"Dave is coming in around lunchtime next Tuesday," Nate said. "Which means we have to have the whole thing storyboarded and outlined by Monday."
Dave's our freelance editor. He has a day job, but does work for us on evenings and weekends. I haven't met him yet. Mandy said that once Nate has a full-time position available for him, he's going to jump ship and come work for us. I'm wondering where he's going to sit.
"Friday," Mandy reminded Nate. "Monday's a holiday."
"We can't do it by Friday," Tex said. "And I'm out of town all weekend."
"We don't have a choice," Nate said. "Everyone has approved overtime for this week."
"Great," I said. "What should I work on?"
"Honestly K., nothing," Mandy said. "You did everything on your list which blows my mind, by the way but Tex and I have to go through all the tapes before we can do anything. I'd say take off for today, and plan on working a billion hours the rest of the week, starting tomorrow. Right, Nate?"
"Sounds good. But you guys have to get that done today. K., see you tomorrow."
I texted Meg on the way out to see if she wanted to have lunch. She did, so I headed over to the old office. As I approached, Ben was walking out.
"What are you doing here?" he asked, surprised.
"Got out of work early. Thought I'd have lunch with Meg. I was going to swing by and visit you afterward."
"It must be nice to be a lady of leisure," he teased. "I'm actually heading out to meet with Janis and the landlord of my new apartment. I probably won't be back by the time you're done."
"You got it?!"
"I did," he said with a smile. "She just called about a half hour ago. I was going to call you on the way."
I congratulated him with a hug and a kiss. As soon as he was gone, Meg came out. And she was not in a good mood.
"Did you notice how hungover Tex was today?" she asked.
"He seemed a little tired. I thought it was from traveling."
"No. It was from being out until 3:30 in the morning. With your roommate. On a Sunday. After being out until 4:00 in the morning with him on Saturday. I'm already so over Brad's breakup."
Oh man. It looks like Brad is taking Ben's advice, not mine. And dragging Tex down with him.
